Connecting with #StayHomeWatchTogether:

Why watch Water Warriors now?

When an energy company begins searching for natural gas in New Brunswick, Canada, indigenous and white families unite to drive out the company in a campaign to protect their water and way of life. It is a perfect story for this moment because it allows us to engage with these critically important themes:

➔ How a coalition of unlikely warriors triumph against seemingly insurmountable odds

➔ That solidarity and shared priorities can guide relationships between historically-divided racial communities and natural ecosystems

➔ The lessons taught by the warriors in the story are applicable to a range of issues related to corporate exploitation and the corruption of democracy

Engage & Connect

Before Watching Water Warriors

Connect using these prompts before watching:

  • When you think about the natural world you want for future generations, what is your dream for them? What are your biggest fears?

  • What changes need to be made in order to achieve those dreams, and avert those fears?

  • How does social change happen?

After Watching Water Warriors

Prompts to use as guideposts for post-screening:

  • What did you learn about in the film that was new or surprising to you?

  • Talk about a particular scene or quote that elicited a strong emotional response from you. What was it, and why did it resonate with you?

  • Discuss the coalition that formed to protect the community’s water. What about it was unique? Why are coalitions so powerful and important to social justice movements?

  • Describe the point of view the film is told from. Which perspectives are missing?

Where might you look to find those perspectives?

  • What are the factors that must be weighed when economic development seems to be pitted against health and environmental harms?

  • What lessons do you take from this story that may be useful as we face this global pandemic? COVID19 is particularly lethal to indigenous communities around the world, as well as communities who already live with structural race and class inequities.

  • Why do you think these disparities persist? How might the strategies and tactics demonstrated by the warriors in the film be applied towards eliminating those disparities?
