UNLADYLIKE2020: Traditional media has focused abundantly on suffragists, but what about the first American woman to: Found a hospital on a Native American reservation? Earn an international pilot’s license? Serve in the U.S. Congress? Open a film studio? Sing at Carnegie Hall? Make discoveries in astronomy? Become a bank president? Through 26 animated biographical shorts and a public television broadcast hour, we will give the brave, tenacious women who paved the way in male-dominated fields some well-deserved attention and provide a nuanced, inclusive understanding of America’s past.
One of the greatest strengths of UNLADYLIKE2020 is the diversity and inclusiveness of the women featured, representing as many racial, cultural, gender, economic, geographic and professional backgrounds as possible. We will tell an untold narrative: how women, and in particular women of color, changed America a century ago. Providing a rich and unexpected angle to the role of women in U.S. history, each short sheds light on the social and racial prejudices these women were up against, the emotional and physical roadblocks they overcame, their successes and failures, the men who supported them on their journeys, and what we can learn today from their persistence to overcome obstacles that may still impede women’s and girls’ successes today.
