A cautionary tale for these times of democracy in crisis, the personal and political fuse to explore one of the most dramatic periods in Brazilian history. Combining unprecedented access to leaders past and present, including Presidents Dilma Rousseff and Lula da Silva, with accounts of her own family's complex past, filmmaker Petra Costa (ELENA) witnesses their rise and fall and the tragically polarised nation that remains.

Petra Costa

Petra Costa is a Brazilian actress and filmmaker whose work lives on the borderlines of fiction and nonfiction. In her work, the personal and the political are inextricably linked. Her latest film, the Academy Awards nominated documentary The Edge of Democracy (Netflix Original, 2019), is the third documentary of a trilogy where Petra investigates her family story. While the film navigates the instability of national politics in Brazil, Costa starts to find the parallels in her own family’s saga, resulting in an innovative fusion of political thriller with personal essay. Petra has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 2018.

Connecting with #StayHomeWatchTogether: Why watch The Edge of Democracy now?

Living through a time of great uncertainty, we increasingly rely on the stability and responsiveness of our democratic institutions to heal and protect us all. Yet there is reason to be concerned. The global pandemic reveals deep divides and numerous vulnerabilities in democracies around the globe, with authoritarian leaders using the virus outbreak to strengthen repression. The Edge of Democracy provides an important moment of pause to reflect and examine the current state of democracy around the world and consider:

  • What needs to be fixed?

  • Under what kinds of conditions are the vulnerabilities of a democracy revealed?

  • What role can you play in strengthening and preserving your democracy?

  • Are their effective reforms and responses that each of us can take to address corrupt institutions and leaders at this time?
