Thirteen years ago, after the death of his 22-year-old younger brother Evelyn, director Orlando von Einsiedel could barely even say his name. Orlando and his other two siblings buried the trauma, rarely talking about it. Over a decade later, the remaining family set out on a hiking tour, visiting landscapes Evelyn liked to walk, to reflect on his life and death. The result is an intensely personal and moving take on the emotional impact of suicide within a family and a powerful account of the benefits of creating safe spaces for emotional communication.

The process of making this film - walking and talking about Evelyn - enabled Orlando and his family to address this painful past, and begin to heal.

Engage & Connect

Before Watching Evelyn

●      In the time of this global pandemic, there are many layers of loss occurring simultaneously - possible loss of health, loss of a loved one, loss of livelihood and of routine, and loss of any sense of normalcy. There may also be a great deal of uncertainty about the future which is also a cause of anxiety.

Acknowledging these feelings in the moment that we are living through can be one way to take care of yourself and prepare for a screening of Evelyn.

After Watching Evelyn

●      Take a moment, breathe and acknowledge the feelings you are feeling. If it is loss, acknowledge the feeling of loss you are experiencing - privately or with others

●      Loss is universal, grief is very personal. Allow yourself, and others, to experience grief on their own terms. Give one another plenty of space. There is no one right way to grieve.

●      The film is a beautiful example of how cathartic walking therapy can be. On the Evelyn film’s website, they encourage people to incorporate a walk into their film screening. You could meet as a group and walk to the venue to watch the film or you could arrange a long walk afterwards to digest what you’ve seen and talk about your own experiences.

●      If available, revisit the poem read at the end of Evelyn titled “Walk Within You.” It can be accessed from the film website here.
